They usually expect me to answer with a month. Instead, I ask another question:
What kind of experience are you hoping to have?
Etna changes with the seasons, but also with the light, the wind, the weather and the route. I have seen visitors fall in love with the volcano at every time of year—some because of the silence of a winter morning, others because of the colours of a summer sunset.
That is why I believe the best time to visit is not only about the weather. It is about the memory you want to take home.
Spring: comfortable hiking and renewed landscapes
If hiking is your priority, spring is often the easiest recommendation. Temperatures are usually pleasant, the air can feel fresh after winter and longer walks are more comfortable than during the hottest part of summer.
Spring also brings contrast to the volcanic landscape as vegetation returns around dark lava fields. Conditions still vary with altitude and weather, so layers and a windproof outer jacket remain useful.
Summer: long days and unforgettable sunsets
Summer is the busiest season, but it also offers long daylight hours and some of the most memorable sunset experiences. As the light becomes warmer, the colours of the lava change and the atmosphere feels completely different from the middle of the day.
